WE HAD AN EMERGENCY REPAIR THAT WE HAD TO DO, AND WE'VE GOT SOME SHORING IN PLACE RIGHT NOW TO KEEP UP.

SOME OF THE BAY. THE ROOF WAS KIND OF FALLING IN AND WE'LL KIND OF GO THROUGH THAT REAL QUICK AND SHOW YOU WHAT HAPPENED AND WHAT WE'RE, WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT. SO ABOUT APRIL OF LAST YEAR FIRE OPERATIONS PERSONNEL.

WHILE THEY WERE CHECKING OUT THE RIG NOTICED ABOVE THEM THE CEILING WAS COMING IN AND COLLAPSING, SO WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE SHEETROCK WAS DOWN AND WE THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS WATER INTRUSION OR SOMETHING ELSE THAT CAUSED THAT.

WE IMMEDIATELY CALL FACILITIES TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT.

IT GOT BEYOND THEIR SCOPE OF, OF EXPERTISE. AND SO WE HAD AN ENGINEER COME OUT AND LOOK AT IT AND THEY SAID THE TRUSSES HAD FAILED.

SO WHEN THAT BUILDING WAS BUILT, IT WAS BUILT WITH WOOD TRUSSES, AND IT WAS NOT ENGINEERED TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT THAT IT WAS BUILT WITH.

AND IT WAS DEEMED UNSAFE FOR OCCUPATION. SO GIVE YOU A QUICK LAYOUT.

WE HAVE THE STATION ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE PROPERTY, THE BAY THAT INTERSECTS AND THEN THE WORKOUT ROOM SHOP AND OTHER THINGS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE EQUIPMENT. SO WE KEPT THE EMS IN THERE.

WE KEPT A RESERVE APPARATUS, WE KEPT A RESERVE AMBULANCE AND OF COURSE ENGINE 505 THEY ALL HAD TO MOVE OUT.

AND SO FACILITIES DID A GREAT JOB OF GETTING AN ENGINEER IN THERE AND THEN SHORING IT UP WITH SHORING AND STRUTS AND ALL THOSE THINGS TO MAKE, MAKE SURE THE ROOF DIDN'T FALL IN AND CAVE IN.

AND SO IN MAY OF LAST YEAR, THEY, THAT ENGINEER SAW THAT THE TRUSSES FAILED AND THAT ANOTHER ENGINEER SUPPORTED THE AND APPROVED THE SHORING DESIGN AND MADE SURE THE SHORING WAS DONE CORRECTLY.

I PETITIONED THAT ENGINEER BEFORE IT GOT COLD.

CAN WE AT LEAST HAVE THAT ONE BAY? BECAUSE IF OUR, IF OUR EQUIPMENT IS OUT IN THE WEATHER AND IT FREEZES, THAT'S A VERY COSTLY THING BECAUSE AS YOU KNOW, OUR ENGINES CARRY WATER AND IT'S NOT GOOD WHEN THOSE FREEZE.

SO WE WERE ABLE TO, TO MAKE IT TO WHERE THE ENGINE COULD RESPOND OUT OF THERE IN THE BAY.

BUT THAT TOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO GET THAT DONE.

AND SO WE DID AN EMERGENCY PO. AND ON JULY 10TH OF THAT LAST YEAR THROUGH SABRINA AND SHE WAS ABLE TO PUSH THAT THROUGH FOR US, WHICH HELPED US GET. SOME CONDITIONS AND SOME PEOPLE IN RIGHT AWAY TO LOOK AT IT, ASSESS IT.

AND IT TOOK A WHILE TO GET THROUGH THE PROCESS OF, OF ALL THE ENGINEERING DOCUMENTS AND SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS TO MAKE SURE THE SCOPE OF WORK THAT WE WERE LOOKING AT AND HOW WE WERE GOING TO REDO THE BAY AND SO ON.

ON JUNE 23RD OF LAST YEAR, WE HAD H. HOEFER WELKER, WHO'S ALSO CONTRACTED TO DO THE ART CENTER.

WHILE THEY WERE IN THE AREA. WE HAD THEM LOOK AT THE SYSTEM AND THE EXISTING WOOD TRUSS SYSTEM OVER THE THREE BAYS SHOWED SIGNS OF OVERLOADING THAT APPEAR TO EXCEED THE ORIGINAL DESIGN CAPACITY. AND THEY SAW SOME VISIBLE DEFLECTION.

AND THE WEIGHT OF THE MECHANICAL AND EXHAUST SYSTEM WERE REALLY IMPINGING ON THAT THING COMING DOWN.

AND SO THE FULL ROOF REPLACEMENT WAS RECOMMENDED.

AND SO THEY ENGAGED BIRCH AND THEY DID A BIDDING AND SCOPE OF PROJECT TO, TO KIND OF LOOK AT THAT BAY.

REDESIGN IT TO MAKE SURE IT FITS IN WITH. OF COURSE, WHAT'S ALREADY THERE ON THE OTHER SIDE FOR THE STATION IT'S GOT TO BE SEAMLESS.

THE BIG PROBLEM IS DOING THE WORK WHILE WE'RE STILL IN EMERGENCY RESPONDING.

AND SO THEY GOT TO DO DEMOLITION WHILE THEY'RE DOING REMODELING AND BUILDING.

AND SO THAT, THAT'S PART OF THE COST, RIGHT? IS TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT WHILE WE CAN STILL RESPOND.

WE RECEIVED THEIR FINAL BID IN LATE FEBRUARY, EARLY MARCH OF THIS YEAR.

AND THE BIG EMPHASIS IS ON OUR ABILITY TO CONTINUE TO RESPOND.

WE SELECTED BIRCH BECAUSE OF THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHOSEN ARCHITECT AND THEIR WORK PORTFOLIO.

AND DUE TO THE REASON IT WAS AN EMERGENCY PO, WE DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE NORMAL BIDDING PROCESS.

AND SO THEY'RE READY TO GET TO WORK. BUT SOME OF THE COST FACTORS IN THE $1.4 MILLION REMODEL IS ONE, WE WANT TO PUT A METAL ROOF ON IT TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THAT ROOF.

THE EXPANSIVENESS OF THE PROJECT. DEMOLITION OF THE SITE WHILE WE'RE OCCUPYING THE SITE AND BEING ABLE TO RESPOND OUT OF A BAY AT ALL TIMES.

THE LONG SPAN BETWEEN THE WAY THAT THAT THING IS BUILT ALSO SOME NEW CEILING AND EXHAUST FOR FIREFIGHTER SAFETY.

RIGHT NOW WE USE THE, THE MACHINES THAT CAPTURE DIESEL EXHAUST AT POINT.

AND SO THAT STILL REQUIRES SOMEBODY BENDING DOWN, INHALING ALL THOSE FUMES.

SO WE'RE GOING TO DO A FULL BAY EXHAUST SYSTEM IN THAT AS WELL.

AND THEN REINSTALLATION OF ALL THE MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. SPECIFIC FINISHES FOR MAKE SURE THAT THIS LASTS US A LONG TIME AND IT'S DONE RIGHT.

AND THEN WE'RE DOING SOME ADDITIONS OF LARGE FANS IN THAT BAY FOR COMFORT AS WELL AS WE HAVE OUR OPEN HOUSE OUT THERE.

SO WHEN WE CAN OPEN THAT UP, WE CAN DO MORE WITH THAT INSIDE THE STRUCTURE.

HERE'S A FEW PICTURES OF WHAT'S GOING ON OUT THERE. YOU SEE ALL THE THE STRUTTING AND THE SCAFFOLDING HOLDING THE ROOF UP AND WHERE THAT ONE BAY THAT WE'RE ABLE TO RESPOND OUT OF RIGHT NOW IS KIND OF SHORED UP IN A WAY TO HELP US DO THAT.

DO WE KNOW WHAT OPPORTUNITY WE HAVE TO RECOVER SOME OF OUR EXPENSES? SO WE LOOKED INTO THAT, AND I HAVE SOME OF THE TEAM HERE FROM, FROM STAFF TO TALK ABOUT US TRYING TO REMEDIATE THAT.

I THINK FINDING THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECT AND BUILDER HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE AND THAT COMPANY HAS GONE OUT OF BUSINESS.

THAT'S OKAY THE REAL PROBLEM IS THE TRUSS MANUFACTURER WHO ACTUALLY ENGINEERED AND BUILT THESE TRUSSES DID GO OUT OF BUSINESS.

THEY WERE PURCHASED BY ANOTHER COMPANY WITH ASSETS ONLY.

SO THE OTHER COMPANY ISN'T RESPONSIBLE AND HAS NO DRAWINGS, NO INVOICES, NO DOCUMENTS BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T BUY THAT.

THEY JUST BOUGHT ASSETS ONLY. SO WE'RE KIND OF OUT OF LUCK.

PLUS IT'S 15 YEARS. SO ANY WARRANTY WOULD HAVE BEEN OVER FIVE YEARS AGO.

SO THIS BUILDING IS ONLY 15 YEARS OLD? YEAH. IT'S NOT VERY OLD.

IN THE RECONSTRUCTION SLIDE, IT SAID, SEEMED TO IMPLY THAT WE ARE OVERLOADING THE ROOF WITH OUR EQUIPMENT.

ARE WE ATTACHING THINGS TO THE ROOF? AND THAT WAS WHAT WAS NOT FACTORED IN? TO THAT POINT, I DON'T THINK IT WAS ENGINEERED FOR THE SPAN AND THE WAY THE SPAN WAS WITH WOOD ENGINEERED TRUSSES, IT. THE SPAN WAS TOO LARGE, HONESTLY, FOR THAT.

AND THEN THE WAY IT WAS FASTENED TO THE STATION SIDE OF THE BUILDING WAS ALSO INCORRECT.

AND THE WEIGHT THAT WAS PUT ON IT, WHICH WAS ENGINEERED TO PUT ON IT IN THE ORIGINAL SCOPE OF THE PROJECT.

WHATEVER ENGINEER DID THAT MUST HAVE NOT HAVE TAKEN THAT INTO ACCOUNT.

YEAH, I THINK TO MAYOR PRO TEM'S POINT, I THINK I WOULD JUST LIKE TO HAVE SOME CONFIDENCE THAT WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE THIS MISTAKE AGAIN WHEN WE BUILD THE NEXT FIRE STATION ON THE WEST SIDE. THAT THAT IS A GREAT POINT, AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT IT WILL NOT BE THE CASE.

WE'RE VETTING THOSE VERY, VERY THOROUGHLY. AND THE SCOPE OF WORK THAT WE'RE DOING FOR STATION 6.

AND OF COURSE, THIS REMODEL AND SOON TO BE STATION 3 WITH OUR CIP GROUP, WE'RE PRETTY STRINGENT ON MAKING SURE THIS THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.

STATION 4 IS THE SAME DESIGN, HOWEVER.

YES. HOWEVER, IT'S GOT ONE LESS BAY, SO THE SPAN IS NOT AS GREAT AND SO IT'S HOLDING UP JUST FINE.

WE WENT AHEAD AND INSPECTED THAT ONE AS WELL TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S SAFE AND WON'T NEED ANY UPCOMING REPAIRS.

I KNOW THIS IS FAR REACHING, BUT THE STATE DOESN'T HAVE ANY BACKUP FOR EMERGENCY PLANS LIKE THIS.

WHEN THIS COMES UP. RIGHT? THERE'S NOTHING. NOT NOT TO MY KNOWLEDGE AND IT'S NOT THAT THAT WASN'T A WE CHASED THAT RABBIT A LITTLE BIT AS WELL AND THAT DIDN'T PAN OUT.

SO KUDOS TO FINANCE AND FACILITIES HONESTLY FOR JUMPING ON THIS.

SO. YEAH LOOKS LIKE A CONSTRUCTION DEFECT. SO IT WAS BOUND TO GIVE OUT EVENTUALLY.

TRUSS YES, SIR IT WAS A TRUSS. NOT TRUST BUT TRUSS.

YEAH. TRUSS ISSUE YES. AND THE ENGINEER WHO DESIGNED IT EXPECT IT ORIGINALLY IT WAS SPECTRUM STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT ENGINEERED TO HOLD THE LOADS THAT IT WAS MEANT TO HOLD.

THE, THE COVER, THE SPAN. IT IT DID. WE ALSO DON'T KNOW FULLY IF IT WAS FULLY ON THE ENGINEER FOR THAT. OR WAS IT THE INSTALLATION. RIGHT? WAS IT A BAD INSTALLATION VERSUS THE ENGINEER? BECAUSE AS DEAN SAID, CAN'T FIND ANY RECORDS.

WE HAVE PLANS, BUT WE DON'T HAVE ENGINEERING TYPE PLANS TO THAT SCOPE.

AND SO WE EXHAUSTED ALL THAT TO TRY TO GET REMEDIATION BEFORE ALL THIS CAME FORWARD.

BUT DO WE KNOW WHICH ENGINEER PUT THEIR STAMP ON THERE? WE KNEW THE ENGINEER AND THAT ENGINEER, I BELIEVE THAT FIRM GOT BOUGHT OR AS DEAN WAS TALKING ABOUT, I DON'T I CAN'T SPEAK TO THAT WAIT, YEAH WE CAN'T HEAR YOU. COME UP TO THE MICROPHONE IF WE'RE GOING TO SPEAK. IT'S OKAY.

THE TRUSS MANUFACTURER THAT WENT OUT OF BUSINESS.

SO THAT'S WHAT'S THE PROBLEMS. THEY WENT OUT OF BUSINESS AND THAT ENGINEER IS LONG GONE.

BUT SO THE ENGINEER IS RETIRED? BUT THEY STILL MAINTAIN A LICENSE.

YEAH, BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHO IT IS, IS MY POINT.

HE WORKED FOR THE COMPANY. THE COMPANY IS OUT OF BUSINESS.

WE HAVE NO RECORDS. BUT FROM NOW ON, WE WILL MAINTAIN THOSE RECORDS.

AND OUR FACILITIES TEAM AND EVERYBODY WORKED HARD TO FIGURE OUT A WAY TO GET IT IN THE BAY.

AND THERE WAS TIMES WHERE WE WEREN'T SURE WE WERE ABLE TO DO THAT. BUT YOU KNOW, WE'RE GLAD TO FINALLY GET THIS IN FRONT OF YOU, BUT PLEASE TRUST OVER THE LAST YEAR, THERE'S A LOT OF WORK THAT WENT INTO FROM A LOT OF DIFFERENT FOLKS TO GET THIS TO A WORKABLE SPACE.

AND AGAIN, THIS IS SOMETHING WE DIDN'T BUDGET FOR, WE DIDN'T PLAN FOR, WE DIDN'T WANT TO ADDRESS.

SO I WANT TO KIND OF JUMP RIGHT INTO IT AND, AND ROLL THROUGH A FEW THINGS.

SO FIRST THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT OUR PROJECT TIMELINE.

AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE'S LOTS OF MILESTONES UP THERE.

WE DON'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH ALL OF THOSE. BUT OVER THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF WE HAVE HAD A NUMBER OF COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES AND TOUCH POINTS FOR STAFF, COUNCIL. AND ALSO THE SELECTION COMMITTEE REALLY RELATED TO THE PROJECT.

AND WE'VE BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD ON IT GOING FORWARD THERE.

SO AS A REMINDER, PETERS COLONY MEMORIAL PARK IS A SPECIALTY PARK THAT'S DEDICATED TO HONORING PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE RESIDENTS OF FLOWER MOUND.

AND THEN OUR ART PIECE THAT WILL BE THERE IS GOING TO COMPLEMENT THESE FEATURES, BUT ALSO SERVE AS A MEANINGFUL VISUAL ANCHOR WITHIN THE PARK.

SO MOVING ON A LITTLE BIT HERE THIS IS RENDERING A COUPLE OF RENDERINGS OF WHERE THE ART WILL GO.

AND WE USE THAT IN THE SOQ PROCESS TO HELP ARTISTS UNDERSTAND THE SITE CONTEXT AND ALSO THE OVERALL PARK EXPERIENCE THAT WE WERE THAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR THERE.

AND THEN SO MOVING ON TO OUR SELECTION COMMITTEE, WE WERE VERY INTENTIONAL ABOUT HOW WE BUILT THE SELECTION COMMITTEE.

WE WANTED A STRONG MIX OF EXPERTISE. OUR CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MEMBERS BRING EXPERIENCE WITH CREATING, SUPPORTING AND INTERPRETING ART. AND THEN ALL OF THE STAFF ON THERE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH PUBLIC ART OPERATIONS AS WELL AS PROJECT MANAGEMENT.

AND THEN SPECIFICALLY, IF YOU LOOK, WE HAD CLAYTON ON THERE AS PARK SUPERINTENDENT.

WE REALLY WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE WERE EVALUATING DURABILITY, MAINTENANCE AND OUR LONG TERM, LONG TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF THE ART AND THE MATERIALS.

A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THE SELECTION PROCESS. SO WE CREATED A VISION AFTER WE HAD OUR COMMITTEE AND WE WANTED TO BE REALLY CLEAR, WANTED THE CRITERIA TO BE TO BE PRETTY FORWARD FOR THE, THE POTENTIAL ARTISTS.

AND OUR GOAL WAS TO HAVE A LASTING VISUAL TRIBUTE FOR THE FLOWER, FOR FLOWER MOUND, EXCUSE ME.

AND WE WANTED TO EMPHASIZE ARTWORK THAT WAS VISUALLY COMPELLING, THAT IT SPARKED CURIOSITY AND ALSO APPEALED TO ALL AGES.

SO EQUALLY IMPORTANT, WE TALKED ABOUT IT WAS DURABILITY AND THE MAINTENANCE OF THAT.

SO THIS WAS KIND OF OUR TIMELINE FOR THE SOLICITATION.

AND YOU CAN SEE THAT WE DID THAT OVER THE SUMMER OF 2025.

WE ENDED UP RECEIVING 20 QUALIFIED RESPONSES, WHICH WAS EXCITING FOR THE PROJECT THERE.

THE MAJORITY OF THOSE LEANED MORE TOWARDS METAL SCULPTURE.

AND SO THAT'S KIND OF WHERE WE, WE TRENDED ON THAT.

AND THEN CONTINUING ON. SO AFTER WE HAD ALL OF THE, ALL OF THE, THE STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATION, ALL OF OUR PROPOSALS, THE SELECTION COMMITTEE MET OR DIDN'T MEET.

EXCUSE ME. THEY GOT ALL OF THOSE PROPOSALS AND THEY SCORED THEM SEPARATELY.

AFTER THAT. AND THAT'S KIND OF HOW WE DO OUR RFP PROCESS WITH THE TOWN.

BUT AFTER THAT, THE COMMITTEE MET AND THEN FOUND THAT THE TOP FIVE ARTISTS THAT WERE SCORED SEPARATELY WERE PRETTY, PRETTY CONSISTENTLY RANKED HIGH ACROSS THE COMMITTEE. SO WE HAD A TOP FIVE.

FROM THERE WE WE MET AGAIN TO BRING THAT DOWN TO THREE.

AND SO THEN WE HAD OUR TOP THREE WITH OUR TOP THREE.

WE REACHED OUT TO THOSE ARTISTS AND ASKED THEM TO COMPLETE A, A CONCEPT DESIGN FOR US.

AND SO THEY HAD A COUPLE OF MONTHS TO DO THE CONCEPT DESIGN. AND THEN WE INTERVIEWED THEM VIRTUALLY AND HEARD THEIR CONCEPT DESIGN, SAW THEIR CONCEPT DESIGN. WE LEFT THAT OVER THE CHRISTMAS NEW YEAR'S HOLIDAY AND MET ONE MORE TIME TO TALK THROUGH THOSE CONCEPT DESIGNS AGAIN.

AND IT WAS PRETTY UNANIMOUS AND IT WAS PRETTY QUICK THAT WE CHOSE THE, THE ARTIST THAT WE'RE BRINGING FORWARD TONIGHT.

AND SO WITH THAT, I WANT TO INTRODUCE THE SELECTED ARTIST TO YOU ALL.

AND THAT'S MEDWEDEFF FORGE AND DESIGN. JOHN MEDWEDEFF HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS AS A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST FOR MORE THAN 35 YEARS, AND HE'S GOT A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF WORKS THAT ARE REPRESENTED IN PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND CORPORATE COLLECTIONS.

THEY. HE HAS IN HIS PORTFOLIO MAJOR INSTALLATIONS IN ATLANTA, NASHVILLE, BATON ROUGE, NEW YORK CITY, JUST TO NAME A FEW. PRETTY LARGE CITIES THAT HE'S GOT THOSE THERE.

AND THEN ALSO, INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, HE HAS WORKED FOR SOME RECOGNIZED ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING THE PGA TOUR.

SO THAT'S KIND OF INTERESTING AS WELL. SO HIS EXPERIENCE GIVES US SOME CONFIDENCE THAT HE WILL BE ABLE TO DELIVER HIGH QUALITY FINAL PRODUCT TO THE TOWN OF FLOWER MOUND.

AND WE'RE EXCITED TO HOPEFULLY MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT.

SO I WANTED TO SHOW YOU ALL A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES OF HIS WORK.

SO THE FIRST ONE, THIS IS WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR THE PGA TOUR.

IT'S THERE, IT'S THEIR SAINT JUDE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHIES.

AND SO HE'S DOING THAT FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. BUT IT'S A SMALLER SCALE.

AND THEN WE'VE GOT A MUCH LARGER PIECE HERE. AND THIS IS MORE OF A LARGE SCALE PUBLIC ARTWORK, BUT IT SHOWS HIS ABILITY. ABILITY TO CREATE VISUALLY STRIKING PIECES THAT WORK WITH THE AREA THAT THEY ARE IN.

AND ALSO YOU KIND OF CAN NOTICE THAT THERE'S SOME MOVEMENT AND FORM ON THIS ONE.

AND THAT'S KIND OF SOMETHING THAT WILL CARRY INTO THE DESIGN THAT HE'S BRINGING TO, TO FLOWER MOUND.

AND THEN THE OTHER ONE HERE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A LARGE SCALE, BUT IT'S ALSO OUT OF WEATHERING STEEL OUT OF CORTEN STEEL.

AND THAT IS MORE OF THE MATERIAL THAT WE'RE GOING FOR SINCE WE'LL BE OUTDOOR.

AND IT'S PRETTY, IT'S PRETTY SUSTAINABLE THERE. SO HERE'S OUR DESIGN.

AND THIS IS WHAT THE CONCEPT DESIGN LOOKS LIKE.

EXCUSE ME. IT IS A SCULPTURE THAT WILL BE FABRICATED FROM CORTEN STEEL, AND IT IS DESIGNED TO PRESENT A DIFFERENT VISUAL EXPERIENCE FROM EACH ANGLE THAT YOU APPROACH FROM. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT IT IS A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT PIECE.

IT'S OVER 14FT TALL, SO IT'S GOING TO BE A PRETTY LARGE PIECE.

AND THEN WANTED TO JUST KIND OF SHOW YOU A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OF THE DESIGN.

KIND OF EMBEDDED INTO THE RENDERINGS OF THE PARK.

AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THE FORM ACTUALLY CHANGES A LITTLE BIT DEPENDING ON THE VIEWER'S POSITION JUST FROM THAT.

AND I THINK THAT ALIGNS WITH THE GOAL OF CREATING SOMETHING THAT SPARKS CURIOSITY AND ALSO REPEAT ENGAGEMENT FOR THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING TO THE PARK OFTEN.

SO JUST A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT ELEVATIONS SO THAT YOU CAN SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE THE INTENTIONALITY BEHIND THE DESIGN AND AGAIN, HOW IT, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO SEE IT DIFFERENTLY FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES AS YOU'RE COMING IN. AND THEN AS WE MOVE FORWARD THIS IS OUR, OUR TIMELINE THAT'S EXPECTED. IT IS A REASONABLE TIMELINE WITH TIME BUILT IN JUST IN CASE THERE ARE ANY KIND OF MEDIUM DELAYS IF, YOU KNOW, IF THERE'S SOMETHING WITH THE SUPPLIES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT, BUT BIG DATES WOULD BE END OF MAY.

THAT'S WHEN WE'D EXPECT TO HAVE OUR FINAL DESIGN SUBMISSION SO THAT WE CAN START POURING THE FOUNDATION FOR IT.

I'VE LIVED HERE IN FLOWER MOUND SINCE APRIL OF 99 AND HAVE HAD A LONG-TERM INTEREST IN THE ARTS.

AND I'M JUST THRILLED TO BE A PART OF ALL OF THIS.

IN TERMS OF WHAT WE DO WE'VE HAD A FEW OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS TO DEAL WITH ART PROJECTS.

NOTHING AS SIGNIFICANT AS THIS ONE. AND I THINK FOR EVERYBODY ON THE COMMITTEE, STAFF AND COMMISSION PEOPLE ALIKE, IT'S BEEN AN IMPORTANT PROJECT BECAUSE WE KNOW WE'RE HONORING PEOPLE BECAUSE THIS IS A MEMORIAL PARK AND THE ARTWORK THAT WE CHOSE, WE ALL FELT NEEDED TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH WHAT THE WHOLE POINT OF THAT PARK WAS SOMETHING THAT WOULD LET PEOPLE CONTEMPLATE THINGS WHEN THEY WERE IN THERE. IT'S NOT A DEFINED, IN-YOUR-FACE DAISY OR SOME SUCH THING.

IT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN SIT BY AND SIT WITH FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT ANGLES AND HAVE A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE.

WE WERE JUST FIRST OF ALL, I WAS THRILLED THAT WE HAD SO MANY ARTISTS RESPOND INITIALLY, AND THERE WERE SEVERAL THAT DIDN'T UNDERSTAND [LAUGHTER] BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO PAINT MURALS.

WELL, WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY PLACE FOR THE MURALS. SO, YOU KNOW, WE JUST NARROWED IT DOWN.

AND TRAVIS IS CORRECT, THIS WAS A COMPLETELY UNANIMOUS CHOICE THAT INCLUDES STAFF AS WELL AS COMMISSION MEMBERS.

THERE WAS REALLY NO DISSENT. I MEAN, WE HAD QUESTIONS, BUT THE ARTIST WAS ABLE TO RESPOND TO THEM.

WE DID HAVE THE CHANCE TO SPEAK TO JOHN AND TWO OF THE OTHER ARTISTS WHO WERE A PART OF THE TOP THREE.

AND AS WE GOT THROUGH THOSE INTERVIEWS, IT WAS JUST EVEN MORE CLEAR TO US THAT JOHN WAS THE RIGHT ARTIST AND HIS WORK WAS THE RIGHT WORK, FOR THE PARK. AND SO WE'RE ALL THRILLED. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS HAPPEN.

AND WE'VE HAD SOME PEOPLE SAY AS THEY GO PAST THE PARK, THEY'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

AND I LIKE THE PERSPECTIVE OF IT THAT YOU HAVE DIFFERENT FROM EVERY PERSPECTIVE.

YOU CAN SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. IT'S VERY DYNAMIC AND IT HONORS WHAT WE WANT FOR THAT IN THAT AREA.

YEAH IT WAS A PRIVILEGE TO WORK ON IT. AND IT WAS ALSO GREAT THAT THE EMPLOYEES AND THE COMMISSION PEOPLE SAW EYE TO EYE BECAUSE WE ALL COME FROM VERY DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE RELATED TO THE ARTS.

AND IT WAS JUST SO CLEAR. THAT'S WHY IT WAS SO COMPELLING.

YOU KNOW, WE JUST FEEL LIKE WE MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE SO.

VERY NICE. SO I WAS HOPING. I THINK WE JUST NEED TO NOT PUT OUR FACE RIGHT ON THE MICROPHONE.

IT SEEMS LIKE JUST STAND BACK A LITTLE BIT. IT SOUNDS BETTER BECAUSE THE PODIUM SOUNDS GREAT.

AND WHEN WE'RE TALKING, WE CAN'T HEAR OURSELVES OR EACH OTHER.

YOU SOUNDED GOOD. WE'RE WORKING IT OUT. OKAY.

WORKING IT OUT. SO I WAS. WHEN I FIRST SAW THE PACKET, I GOT EXCITED AND I SAW THE PIECE, AND I WAS LESS EXCITED. AND I WAS HOPING FOR SOMETHING MORE TRADITIONAL.

I THINK FOR A CONCERN I HAVE IS THAT WE REALLY BLEW IT IN THE RIVERWALK AND PEOPLE LOOK AT THAT RIVERWALK PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION AND THEY SAY, AND I DON'T WANT THEM TO FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT THIS. NOW WHEN YOU SAID THE ART COMMITTEE HEARING ON THIS, THAT IT WAS CONTEMPLATED AND THE IDEA IS TO SIT THERE AND YOU'LL GET A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE EVERY TIME. THAT DOES MAKE SENSE TO ME, AND I DO. SO THAT I'M STARTING TO COME AROUND. WHAT IS? HOW? DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW THE ARTIST IS INTERPRETING THE DIRECTION YOU GAVE HIM? AND IN THIS EXAMPLE, WHAT IS WHAT'S HE GOING FOR WITH THIS PIECE? I THINK. I DON'T MEAN TO DEFER. NO, I'LL DEFER TO TRAVIS.

BUT I THINK THAT REALLY IT IS TO OPEN INTERPRETATION TO THE FOLKS THAT ARE COMING THERE.

AND I WAS TRYING TO WRITE SOME THINGS DOWN AS I WAS KIND OF, I TALKED WITH HIM AND THAT KIND OF THING, BUT THERE WILL BE A LOT OF DIFFERENT VISITORS THAT COME TO THE PARK AND THEY'RE GOING TO BE CONNECTING WITH THAT PARK IN THEIR WAY.

WE HAVE LEGACY MONUMENTS, WE HAVE THE PAVILION, WE HAVE SOMEBODY COMING OUT FROM THE LIBRARY.

AND SO THEY'RE GOING TO BE CONNECTING TO THE PARK IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS. BUT WE WANT PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO COME IN AND SEE SOMETHING AND GO OVER AND, AND MAKE THEIR DECISION AND HAVE THEIR OPPORTUNITY.

IT'S ALMOST AN ETERNAL FLAME, BUT NOT QUITE. YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE, IT DOESN'T REALLY LOOK LIKE THAT AT ALL. WHAT WERE THE OTHER PROPOSALS THAT YOU FELT LIKE THIS WAS A SUPERIOR PROPOSAL? THEY HONESTLY. SO WE HAD THE WE HAD THE 30 THAT SUBMITTED.

A FEW OF THEM WERE ABLE TO. I MEAN, WE EVALUATED ALL OF THEM.

THEY WERE KICKED OUT PRETTY EASILY. A LOT OF THIS REALLY DID RESONATE WITH KIND OF, I GUESS YOU WOULD CALL IT AN ABSTRACT TYPE OF ART.

AND WE DID HAVE A RELATIVELY OPEN CALL FOR IT.

WE ASKED THEM TO INTERPRET OUR, OUR TWO AREAS OF, OF REALLY LIKE FOCUSING ON PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE AND CONTEMPLATIVE AND THOSE KIND OF THINGS.

AND SO THEY, THEY BROUGHT IT TO US THAT WAY. WE DIDN'T HAVE JUST A SUPER TIGHT CALL AND LANGUAGE ON THAT, BUT MOST OF THEM WERE RELATIVELY ABSTRACT. AND THE OTHER TWO FINALISTS DID NOT HAVE THAT, THEIR WORK DID NOT HAVE THAT SAME IMPACT ON US. THINKING ABOUT WHAT WILL THIS BE LIKE SITTING IN A PARK? ONE OF THE ARTISTS CONSTRUCTED SOMETHING THAT WAS THE LIKE THE INNER WORKINGS OF A SEED THAT WAS JUST.

LIKE IT JUST. OKAY. WE'RE FLOWER MOUND. BUT THAT WAS TWO IN JUST TWO.

YEAH. AND THE OTHER INDIVIDUAL HAD SOMETHING THAT WAS A SIMILAR ABSTRACT TALL.

AND IT JUST DIDN'T HAVE THE SAME IMPACT AS WE LOOKED AT IT.

AND I THINK WE WERE, THE EIGHT OF US, I THINK WE'RE PRETTY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PEOPLE IN FLOWER MOUND VERY DIFFERENT VERY DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS. AND YET WE ALL CAME TOGETHER WHEN WE SAW WHAT WAS AVAILABLE AND SAY THIS WAS RIGHT.

AND I KNOW IT'S NOT MAYBE TRADITIONAL, BUT WE'D HAVE TO DEFINE WHAT DO WE MEAN BY TRADITIONAL.

WELL, I DO THINK THE LANDSCAPE OUT THERE IN THE DESIGN OVERALL IS MORE CONTEMPORARY.

SO THAT, THAT WHOLE ABSTRACT. SO I WAS GOING TO WEIGH IN.

I, IT DIDN'T STRIKE ME RIGHT AWAY, BUT THE MORE I SAT WITH IT AND I THOUGHT ABOUT IT, WHAT APPEALED TO ME MOST IS IN A MEMORIAL PARK.

WHEN YOU'RE REMEMBERING PEOPLE WHO HAVE SACRIFICED SO MUCH OVER TIME, YOUR IDEAS CHANGE.

YOU KNOW, AS YOU PROCESS GRIEF AND MEMORIES AND APPRECIATION.

AND SO WHAT RESONATED ON THAT LEVEL FOR ME WAS EVERY TIME YOU MOVED AROUND, YOU HAD A DIFFERENT VIEW.

SO IT MADE ME THINK, THE MORE I LOOK AT IT, THE MORE I ENGAGE WITH IT, THE MORE I WILL GET FROM IT.

AND THEN ALSO THE VISUAL OF IT TO ME LOOKED LIKE A SAIL, BUT IT WASN'T A CONTINUOUS FULL SAIL.

IT HAD HOLES IN IT LIKE DAMAGE HAD BEEN DONE, SACRIFICE HAD BEEN MADE, BUT YET THE SAIL WILL PREVAIL.

AND SO THE WIND STILL CARRIES US THROUGH. AND THAT'S KIND OF WHAT I GOT OUT OF IT.

YEAH, I REALLY LIKE THE SIZE, THE SCALE. I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE IMPRESSIVE AND ATTRACT YOUR ATTENTION, AND I CAN'T ARGUE AT ALL THE RESUME OF THE ARTISTS THAT YOU'VE SELECTED IS VERY IMPRESSIVE.

HE'S DONE A LOT OF GREAT WORK, AND I THINK WE'RE LUCKY TO HAVE HIM DO A PIECE HERE IN FLOWER MOUND.

SO GOOD JOB. WELL, AND I ALSO THINK YOU HAD A REALLY GREAT SELECTION COMMITTEE.

I THINK THE PEOPLE WHO WERE ALL JUST FORGET ME.

I THINK THE OTHER SEVEN PEOPLE WHO WERE ON THAT SELECTION COMMITTEE WERE VERY SENSITIVE TO WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO DO.

VERY OPEN, VERY FLEXIBLE. BUT ALSO REALLY WANTING TO COME TO A CONSENSUS THAT WAS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE TOWN.

YEAH, EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT STYLES. I LOVE THAT ABOUT THIS COLLABORATION.

I ALMOST THINK OF IT AS LIKE A SWORD COMING OUT OF THE GROUND REPRESENTING YOUR SACRIFICE.
